Singular Spectrum Analysis for Time Series

چکیده

Singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is a technique of time series analysis and forecasting. It combines elements of classical time series analysis, multivariate statistics, multivariate geometry, dynamical systems and signal processing. SSA aims at decomposing the original series into a sum of a small number of interpretable components such as a slowly varying trend, oscillatory components and a ‘structureless’ noise. It is based on the singular-value decomposition of a specific matrix constructed upon time series. Neither a parametric model nor stationarity-type conditions have to be assumed for the time series; this makes SSA a model-free technique. The commencement of SSA is usually associated with publication of the papers [1,2] by Broomhead and King. Nowadays SSA is becoming more and more popular, especially in applications. There are several hundred papers published on methodological aspects and applications of SSA, see [3–7] and references therein. SSA has proved to be very successful, and has already become a standard tool in the analysis of climatic, meteorological and geophysical time series; see, for example, [4-6]. More recent areas of application of SSA include engineering, medicine, econometrics and many other fields. Most recent developments in the theory and methodology of SSA can be found in [7]. We start with ‘Basic SSA’, which is the most common version of SSA.

Predicting the Brexit outcome using singular spectrum analysis

In a referendum conducted in the United Kingdom (UK) on June 23, 2016, $51.6\%$ of the participants voted to leave the European Union (EU). The outcome of this referendum had major policy and financial impact for both UK and EU, and was seen as a surprise because the predictions consistently indicate that the ``Remain'''' would get a majority. In this paper, we investigate whether the outcome o...

Searching for Signal in Noise by Random-lag Singular Spectrum Analysis

Singular spectrum analysis, a technique to detect oscillations in short and noisy time series, was Ðrst developed for geophysical applications. This work o†ers a generalization for long and noisy time series in astrophysical applications. The motivating problem is the detection of low-amplitude solar oscillations. Analysis of Process Dynamics with Monte Carlo Singular Spectrum Analysis

Singular spectrum analysis of time series observations can be visualized as a sliding window of width m moving down the time series x of length n, to determine the orthogonal patterns that best capture the variance presented by the window. It is designed to extract information from short and noisy time series. This allows the time series to be decomposed into various components, ideally separat...

Application of the singular spectrum analysis for change-point detection in time series

Singular-spectrum analysis (SSA) is a powerful technique of time series analysis. SSA is based on a singular value decomposition of a ‘trajectory matrix’ obtained from the original time series with subsequent reconstruction of the series. A methodology of change-point detection in time series based on sequential application of the singular-spectrum analysis is proposed and studied. The underlyi...

Approximate Projectors in Singular Spectrum Analysis

Singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is a method of time-series analysis based on the singular value decomposition of an associated Hankel matrix. We present an approach to SSA using an effective and numerically stable high-degree polynomial approximation of a spectral projector, which also provides a means of time-series forecasting. Several numerical examples illustrating the algorithm are given.
